"pretty" - A short kinetic novel

[Windows | Mac | Linux]
Playtime < 1 Hour

Hey, everyone. Wavedash here.

Sometimes on the development blog, we talk about other projects that us Zap Apple developers are doing on the side. We thought we'd start posting that kind of thing here too, since a lot of people ask what we're up to. Today, we're proud to show off our paranormal short story "pretty" for the first time.

In a small town, mysterious disappearances have given rise to numerous rumors of unexplained creatures prowling the streets. You are a normal high school senior with a periphery interest in the supernatural. You wouldn't call it unhealthy or anything. It’s not like you spend your free time on ghost sighting blogs or anything like that (at least not every day). Even so, when a cute classmate asks for your help, you can’t help but say yes.

This game was conceptualized and created in just over two weeks by a few of us who've worked on Starswirl as well as some new faces.

Why two weeks?

Some of you may be familiar with NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month, where writers motivate themselves to finish an entire novel during the month of November. There is a similar event for the visual novel world called NaNoRenO which takes place in March. We remembered that it was happening and got around to starting it halfway through.

So this is the 1.0 Beta version that we're releasing straight out of development. No testing. Everything should be fine, but there's a few things we didn't get around to doing due to the time limit. We'll probably go back and update it later if we get some feedback. Let us know what you think!

  1. This was really good! I saw the ending from a mile away, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. Makes me even more excited for when Starswirl Academy will finally be done!

  2. So, from the mention of vampires, and the fact there were 2 girls that were suspects, I knew one would be a vampire, though I didn't see both of them being vampires coming my way.
I would like to see an expansion of it, or maybe a longer story with teh same premise where more supernatural things were brought in. I mean, if Vampires? why not ghosts? what's to stop Akira from becoming a ghost and hanging around Tomo? (more as an expansion than a dif story)
Loved it though, really nice. Now I want to see Starswirl Academy even more.

    1. The likelyhood of us expanding on this is very slim. It was just a small exercise to see if we could make a game in two weeks. At most, we'll polish it up and make clarifications in the story here and there.

  3. Definitely a genius idea. Maybe it should be a bit longer and have a story after the bite and you (the narrator pretty much) having some side affects or something. You know, a longer story would be nice but if you could improve on what you have now and have some better art which will be difficult because it is so pretty already, it may be work. But who am I to say anything? I am just a 15 year old kid who enjoys fantasy and things like the paranormal, partially, and such. This was just fantastic overall and would love to see more.

    1. There IS more after the credits, but she eats her victims. It's alluded to a few times.

  4. I really enjoyed it. I somewhat saw the ending coming. I was only half right though...lol! I wouldn't mind seeing this expanded on at a later date still well done for only two weeks work.

  5. I liked it. Short, simple, and sweet...(for Kirei at least). Impressive quality for only two weeks. Like most I did see the ending coming and thought it was well done. The only thing I wish this had was a way to get a good end even if its as simple as choosing which girl to follow.

  6. This was fantastic!!! It would really make a good intro to a game, but I assume you wont be expanding because of Starswirl Academy (so excited for that) but if you even decide to do something after Starswirl, Pretty would be a really good project to keep going on.

  7. I really got sucked into this. All of it was exciting to me. I'm extremely impressed that you guys did the whole thing in two weeks time. *claps* It is certainly a concept I'd love to see expanded and explored more. You did say that it's unlikely, but I figure I may as well state my opinion. If, for nothing else; it would show my appreciation of it and even slightly (even by a really small amount) increase the possibility of something more being done with Pretty.

Thank you guys for sharing it with us. I, and i'm sure many others; really appreciate what you all do and so generously share with us. ^u^

  8. Once again you guys continue to impress. I can think of few more enjoyable ways to spend a half hour and it really does feel like the prologue to a truly amazing game. Brilliant writing, brilliant design, brilliant game. Oh, and getting us to name the character after ourselves and then delivering that ending was genius. 10/10 and Kirei best girl :P

  9. Aw, kind of disappointed that ended so quickly. Really loved it, the characters, the art style, everything. Even though you guys probably won't, touching up on it would be great. Maybe even an upgrade from a Kinetic novel to a VN, since if you're gonna let the player get their own name, maybe you could give them a couple of choices (it felt awful leaving Tomo behind).

    on that note, Tomo best

  10. I enjoyed the game, wait can this be called a game? It kind of feels like a long comic, since you don't really get any choices or anything, but I digress.
I saw half the ending coming, though I didn't expect Tomo to also be a vampire as well. Too bad the ending didn't end well for me, but that's what I get for being stupid, and falling easily for her trap.

  11. My anti virus keeps saying this is a virus. and my computer wont let me open it. :(

    1. Sometimes when a file hasn't been downloaded by a lot of people, an antivirus will flag it as suspicious just in case. As long as you download it from an official link, I personally guarantee it's virus free.

    2. Ive tried multiple times. And every time I try to launch it, it gives me errors. And then my Anti Virus keeps telling me to delete it.

  12. This was great. I hear lots of fans wanting expansions and the like, but short and sweet stories is sometimes preferred. As people mentioned it was very predictable however the beginning in which we were in the perspective of Tomo rather than Akira did throw me for a Loop. There is a hiccup when he looks at his phone to text Kirei in class, but besides that, very sharp and well done. I honestly wanted Tomo to be the only vampire in this story, and Kirei end up somehow protecting Akira from Tomo, but a really deep short story would most likely be brought about with more than 14 days of work. Outstanding Job Guys. 8/10

  13. Awesome story, two cute girls, and a moron; best short story game-ish thing ever. You guys (and gals) doing this in two weeks with a small team is EPIC. Would love to see more (1/2 holding my breath). This only makes me even more excited, amped, nervous-cited, exc... for Starswirl Academy. Keep up the good work. Kirei & Tomo FTW :D
